Cherished Memories of Summers Spent at Camp Ondessonk

Stephanie (Heigert) Schofield’s love for Camp Ondessonk is rooted in years of unforgettable moments that have shaped her life. When Camp Ondessonk put out the call asking members of the Camp Community to share their favorite Camp stories, Stephanie completed the online form sharing the memories that still make her smile.

As a camper for five summers from 1989 until 1993, Stephanie embraced every opportunity Camp had to offer. Whether it was horseback riding, handicrafts, or canoeing, each activity was magical. She fondly remembers exploring the split rocks, with Fat Man’s Misery and Augustine’s Agony testing her courage, and the sense of wonder inside Bear Cave and the excitement of the waterslide at Upper Pak.

Stephanie’s proudest Camp moment came during her third summer when she was inducted into the Lodge, a memory she cherishes to this day. She was also part of the inaugural Specialty Camp and attending that week of Camp with her best friend made it even more special.

When Stephanie returned as staff during the summers of 1994 and 1995, she found joy in guiding new campers through their own magical Camp experiences. During those two summers she worked during the four weeks of girl’s season and loved seeing the awe in each camper’s eyes as they discovered the wonders of Camp. One week she calmed a group of first-year campers who thought they saw a ghost by telling them the ghost they thought they saw was really their guardian angel.

More recently, volunteering at Camp has given Stephanie the chance to continue contributing to the place she loves. She has had fun helping with maintenance projects and working in the Trading Post, and looks forward to coming back in 2025.

Stephanie Schofield’s relationship with Camp Ondessonk spans decades, from her adventures as a camper to guiding others as staff, and now as a volunteer.
