Preparing for Summer Camp: Spring Resources to Build Familiarity

February may still have us bundled up against the cold, but in our house, Summer Camp is still top of mind. Thankfully, Camp Ondessonk has our backs by offering a variety of spring resources and events designed to help parents and campers, like us, feel prepared, informed, and excited for the months ahead. From helpful online tools to in-person opportunities to experience Camp, there’s no shortage of ways to start getting ready for summer despite the cold.

We plan to take advantage of the Learning More About Camp Webinar, offered on February 11, March 11, and April 15. This webinar is designed for families of new and returning campers, and it truly lives up to its name. From a virtual unit tour to hearing directly from Camp leadership, it gives a behind-the-scenes look at what Summer Camp 2026 will be like. Attendees also have the chance to ask questions live and get clear, reassuring answers from Camp staff, including Camping Services Director, Nolan Hurst; Senior Director of Communications, Tony Vrooman; and Camp Registrar Kristin Beutel.

We’re also marking our calendar for the Camper Open House on April 11, from 1:00–4:00 pm. This is the best way for campers and parents to experience Camp before summer begins. Families can meet staff, take a guided tour, and experience activities like archery and handicrafts. I know this will be especially helpful for my first-time campers.

We’re also considering making a family day out and beginning our day with the 16th Annual Ondessonk Trail Races, also on April 11th. With new race options this year, including a half marathon through spring wildflowers and a one-mile fun run around Lake Echon, there’s truly something for everyone. Whether it’s the family-friendly fun run, the scenic 5k, the Manchester Trail 10k, or the half-marathon, it’s a great way to experience Camp’s beauty together.

Preparing my kids for Camp isn’t just about packing; it’s about building excitement, confidence, and familiarity. Between the Parent Resources page, webinars, Open House, and on-site events, Camp Ondessonk makes it easy for families like mine to feel ready. That reassurance means everything as we count down the days to summer.
