Promotions Training at Camp Ondessonk Prepares Outdoor Education Team to Visit 100+ Catholic Schools
Camp Ondessonk recently hosted a week-long Promotions Training designed to sharpen one mission-critical skill: communicating the value of Camp to Catholic school communities with clarity and confidence.
Led by Tony Vrooman, Senior Director of Communications, alongside Jess Horvath, Program and Hospitality Director, and Isabelle Linn, Program Coordinator, the training functioned like a graduate communications course with a practical outcome. Each Outdoor Education staff member developed and refined a presentation explaining why students in Catholic schools benefit from Camp Ondessonk Summer Camp programs.
This was not a “read the brochure” approach. Staff were coached to translate Camp’s mission into outcomes that matter to educators and families, including student confidence, healthy independence, friendship, leadership development, and stewardship rooted in faith. The training emphasized how to speak to different audiences, from principals and priests to parents and PSR leaders, while staying consistent, accurate, and inviting.
Throughout the week, the team strengthened the fundamentals of effective presentations. They practiced message structure, storytelling, and delivery. They refined visuals and key talking points. They rehearsed responses to common questions, including safety, program fit, cost, and what sets Camp Ondessonk apart for Catholic families. The result is a repeatable presentation framework that can be adapted to different grade levels and school cultures without losing its core message.
Now the work goes on the road. Camp Ondessonk Outdoor Education staff will be visiting more than 100 schools across four states, helping Catholic school communities understand how Summer Camp can support formation, joy, and belonging for their students.
