A Run Through Muddy Trails and Spring Wildflowers

By Jennifer Tyler

The rain clouds parted just in time for the starter gun to signal the kickoff of the 15th Annual Ondessonk Trail Races. After heavy rains delayed the event by four weeks, 21 runners eagerly gathered Saturday, May 3, 2025, to enjoy a run through Camp’s Spring scenery. The event was moved to the spring this year to take advantage of the warm weather. The 5k run and the more challenging Manchester Trail 10k took runners through the rolling green pastures and blossoming wildflowers. Alternate routes for both races were also created this year to ensure runners’ safety and to try new trails through Camp.

After they completed the race, runners and their families were invited to the Dining Hall to enjoy a taco buffet while they waited for the awards presentation. The awards were unique pieces of art created by Drew and Jana Elbe. The Elbes work as a design team to craft the awards from Camp cedar. This year’s design showcased a painted metal feather set in resin and included a plaque commemorating the date of the event.

The Annual Trail Races drew runners from St. Louis, southern Illinois, and western Kentucky. Runners received a goodie bag with snacks and an official race t-shirt. The event was supported by volunteers in all capacities, including for registration, race timing, and at aid stations. Every year, the races prove to be an excellent opportunity for participants and the Camp Community to build camaraderie and connect with nature and wellness.

Congratulations to our winners!
