Life-saving Training
Camp Ondessonk’s full-time staff recently became certified in First Aid, CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), and AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The certification included both online interactive instruction and in-person education components.
Former Camping Services Director Alissa Hollmann served as the instructor for the course and combined lectures with hands-on skills sessions. Ondessonk staff gained an understanding of first aid best practices, including:
- Asthma emergencies
- Anaphylaxis
- Burns
- Choking
- Diabetic emergencies
- External bleeding
- Environmental emergencies
- Heart Attack
- Poisoning
- Neck, head, and spinal injuries
- Stroke
- Seizure
During CPR and AED Certification, full-time staff learned to evaluate the scene, check for environmental hazards, and review the potential patient for responsiveness, breathing, life-threatening bleeding, or other life-threatening conditions using the shout-tap-shout technique. Participants used adult and baby mannequin training devices to practice providing CPR and AED procedures.
The full-time staff certification is another step to help keep campers and guests safe while meeting the American Camp Association’s guidelines in operating procedures.
