Vienna High School Adventure Club
By Elizabeth Dirnbeck, Development Events Coordinator
Dr. Evan Coulson, Adventure & Group Services Director for Camp Ondessonk, has been working with Phillip Hosfeldt of Vienna High School to launch a pilot after-school Adventure Club for interested students. The club’s primary purpose is to help regional youth become more aware of the outdoor recreation resources in Johnson County.
The Program Team created four initial sessions for the spring semester for the club. During the first kick-off meeting, Coulson and the Vienna High School club advisor conducted a trash pickup stewardship project where the club members walked from Vienna High School to Vienna City Park and learned firsthand the importance of Leave No Trace ethics. Another goal of the spring sessions was to work with a core group of students to develop their leadership skills by developing strategic plans at six sessions of after-school meetings this fall to increase membership and plan future activities.
The Vienna High School Adventure Club will also participate in a field day at Camp Ondessonk on May 9th. Students will challenge themselves in some of Ondessonk’s traditional activities, including hiking, canoeing, and traversing the climbing wall.
