Summer Camp Volunteers – Making a Difference One Week at a Time

As we celebrate another wonderful summer at Camp Ondessonk, we want to thank everyone who made time to volunteer. We were blown away to have had 153 individuals give at least one week of their summer to support our campers, with 22 on-site to help for more than one week! Together, the 2023 summer camp volunteers served Camp for a total of 7,704 hours. Heepwah!

Chris Cahnovsky, President of Camp Ondessonk’s Board of Directors, led campers on horseback during the first of his two weeks volunteering this summer.

Summer camp volunteers play a critical role in helping to effectively deliver Camp’s mission to our campers. They bring joy and care by serving in almost all areas of the operation. Whether providing medical care in the Health Center, working with maintenance to keep Camp’s many acres of grass mowed, assisting in various program areas, sewing Lodge sashes for the newest members to be inducted throughout summer, or spending their week supporting a Unit, our volunteers go above and beyond.

Camp’s volunteer coordinator, Lucia (Juenger) Hodges said it best, “Ondessonk volunteers are the most loving and generous people on the face of the earth!”

New data from Independent Sector and the University of Maryland’s Do Good Institute helps quantify the impact these volunteers have on Camp Ondessonk. Using the estimated value of a volunteer’s time as $31.80 per hour, the 2023 summer camp volunteers provided $244,987.00 in budget relief through their service!

We truly are grateful for everyone who joined us to “teach what matters most” this summer. Your dedication has made a lasting impact on Camp’s mission and the children we served this summer.
