Reviving Sustainability: Patrick Whitaker’s Garden Project at Camp Ondessonk

In a heartfelt nod to sustainability and community, Patrick Whitaker, the Support Services Coordinator at Camp Ondessonk, has successfully reintroduced a sustainable garden to Ondessonk. This initiative aims to foster a connection with nature and promote eco-friendly practices among campers.

Hometown Roots and Diverse Background

Patrick Whitaker hails from Ventura, Calif., but his journey has been far from linear. Growing up in Decatur, Ill., Patrick served as an Abrams Tank Crewman in the US Army, a role that instilled discipline and a strong work ethic. After his military service, Patrick ventured into the private sector, establishing a thriving power-washing company. His experiences have equipped him with a unique skill set that he now brings to his role at Camp Ondessonk.

The Sustainable Garden Initiative

This year, Patrick has also added a new feature to the garden – pumpkins. These pumpkins will be central to the Camp’s Free Fall Festival Saturday, October 26, 2024. Guests can look forward to participating in pumpkin painting crafts, a festive activity that brings families and friends together during the harvest season.

A Multifaceted Role

Patrick’s role at Camp Ondessonk extends far beyond the garden. As the Support Services Coordinator, he coordinates on-site health and safety, manages group and facility logistics, organizes open camping weekends, and assists with light maintenance and program support. His dedication ensures that Camp runs smoothly and guests have a safe and enjoyable experience.
