Preparing for Summer Camp – Filling the Christmas List with Summer Camp Wishes

Every year, right around Thanksgiving, I start a fresh spreadsheet and start adding ideas for the kids’ Christmas lists. I try to include the items they’ve circled in magazines and or mentioned in stores, but this year I’m also adding things that will help them prepare for their next adventure at Camp Ondessonk.

As I sat down to start their lists, I found myself thinking through all the things they’ll need and all the things that will make their week at Camp even more memorable. I started by checking out the Parent Resources page on Camp’s website and opened the Packing for Camp list.

First, I added a sleeping bag for my oldest, who is a traditional camper. Yes, he has one that he’s used in his previous summers as a mini camper, but he’s grown enough that he needs a new, full-sized one for his week in a treehouse unit and during overnights under the stars. I also added insect netting for him, knowing it’s a must to keep the bugs away at night. My mini campers don’t need insect netting in the Mini Camp units, so that didn’t make it on their lists.

Next, everyone needs water shoes or strappy sandals that can survive creek walks, splashy swims, and every adventure Camp throws their way. Chacos or Tevas are great options, but there are lots of similar options available at various price points.

Because their week will be full of new friends and experiences, a camera is on everyone’s list. They need something simple, and possibly waterproof, that they can hold onto all week to capture the smiles, sunsets, and silly moments they’ll want to remember forever.

For our angler-in-training, I added fishing gear because I know the lakes at Camp will be calling his name. A hammock is a fun addition for our traditional camper. I can already imagine him swinging in the hammock village, The Wolf Lounge, or between trees during rest time.

Knowing how hot those summer days can get, a battery-powered fan will be in their stockings along with flashlights.

I will also order a Camp Ondessonk shirt or other gear from the Online Trading Post that they can wear before, during, and after their week in the woods.

Their lists are filled with gear meant for adventure, and I can’t help but feel grateful. This Christmas, we will be wrapping up more than presents. We’re wrapping up experiences and memories in the making.
