Meet the Newest Members of Camp Ondessonk's Horse Herd

The Camp Ondessonk Equestrian Program is excited to announce the arrival of several incredible new horses, each bringing unique qualities and personality to our herd. These additions enrich our equestrian offerings and ensure that our campers have the best possible experience during Summer Camp and beyond. Get to know our newest four-legged friends:

Meet the Newest Members of Camp Ondessonk's Horse Herd- New Horse - Spirit
Spirit

Spirit is a 13-year-old buckskin Quarter Horse mare purchased at the Goreville auction in October. Named after the horse from the kids’ movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, she resembles her animated counterpart (though she’s a mare!). Spirit’s background remains a mystery, but she has proven to be an exceptional trail and pack horse. We are optimistic about her debut as a trail horse in the Summer of 2025.

Meet the Newest Members of Camp Ondessonk's Horse Herd. New Horse- Jackson
Jackson

Jackson, a liver-chestnut Quarter Horse gelding, joined us late last fall courtesy of Kavern and Breanna Kerley. This older gentleman has already proven to be an excellent trail-riding horse. Known for his punctual breakfast habits, he’s often the first to the gate in the morning. Jackson’s calm demeanor makes him an ideal candidate for our Traditional Trail Riding program.

Buddy

Buddy, a bay Quarter Horse gelding, came to us alongside Jackson. These lifelong friends transitioned to their new roles at Camp Ondessonk together. While maintaining his bond with Jackson, Buddy also developed a close friendship with Spirit. Buddy may join our Traditional camper Trail Riding program or our Horse Camp/Horse Adventure programs, depending on his energy and adaptability.

Giovanni

Giovanni, a 15-year-old Friesian-cross Bay gelding, joined the herd in November as part of a trade for our horse, Havi. Giovanni’s previous career as an Amish cart horse in South Carolina transitioned seamlessly into Trail Riding. Friendly and attention-loving, Giovanni has been a hit with staff and horses. We’re excited to see which program suits him best for Horse Camp 2025.

Lightening McQueen

Lightening McQueen, a 12-year-old Spotted Saddle Horse gelding, was purchased locally in October. True to his namesake from Cars, he’s a winner in personality and always eager to be first in line. Lightening’s love for children and energetic spirit makes him a strong candidate for our Horse Adventure program in Summer 2025.

Tater

Tater Tot (Tater), a 5-year-old bay Quarter Horse gelding, came to us from a local cattle farmer in September. Despite his background, Tater prefers leisurely walks and lots of affection over herding cows. His gentle nature and love for kids make him a perfect fit for our Traditional Trail Rides, but time will tell if he finds enough energy to join the Horse Camp or Horse Adventure programs.

Diamond

Diamond, a 16-year-old chestnut Missouri Fox Trotter, was generously donated in August by a local donor who had previously gifted us John Wayne. Diamond has extensive experience Trail Riding in the Shawnee National Forest and is as sweet as they come. He’s slated to join our Horse Adventure program this summer.

Looking Ahead to Summer 2025

These wonderful horses are settling into their new home, and we are thrilled to see them shine in their respective roles. From Trail Rides to specialized horse programs, they will undoubtedly create lasting memories for campers and staff alike. Thank you to everyone who made these additions possible — your support helps us continue to provide exceptional equestrian experiences at Camp Ondessonk!
