Volunteer Program Camp Ondessonk 1

By Lucia (Juenger) Hodges, Volunteer Coordinator

The 2024 Ondessonk Summer Camp season is coming to a close in less than a week. I am taking the opportunity to gratefully acknowledge the significant contributions of 180 volunteers who spent a week or more with us this Summer.

  • Services were provided by three health care professionals; RNs, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and MDs EACH WEEK in our Health Center.
  • Seven of nine sessions of campers benefitted from the care of certified emotional/behavioral health professionals.
  • Mission effectiveness benefited from collaboration and input from volunteers in our Council Program.
  • Volunteers saddled, bridled, repaired, scooped, and encouraged campers at the barn while providing support to hard working barn staff.
  • Hundreds of unit shirts were counted and distributed, Care Packages prepared, and inventories taken by Trading Post volunteers.
  • An excess of 250 Lodge of Ondessonk & Tekakwitha sashes were sewn.
  • Handicrafts, Hiking, Canoeing, Woodscrafting, Archery, Riflery and Challenge were ably supported by volunteers competent in their activity.
  • A select and hardy few served as Assistant Unit Leaders.

Last, but certainly not least, were the Maintenance crew. There were ditches dug, fallen trees removed, water leaks repaired, potholes filled, dishwasher repaired, new lifeguard chairs constructed, hundreds of bales of hay hauled and stored, Pete Korte Lodge construction moved forward, and a bathroom remodeled. The list is endless.

I respect and admire them, ask God’s blessing on each and every one, and offer them a huge amount of the thanks they deserve.
