Just a Glimpse of Riding in the 1960s

Why only a glimpse?

For you young campers and staff, a fire article will appear in the November Newsletter. For you older staff fire” means something is amazing, excellent, or very good. It’s used to praise something of high quality” (source: Fire slang Google Search). I think anyone who has been a Camper can remember that first ride.

I was lucky enough to have Jean (Shadid) Auffarth and Jackie (Savage) McKay contribute photos and a write-up about working in the 1960s. Not only was it fun working with them, but it also increased my knowledge of what it took to work in the Stables. It’s a must-read that will be in the November Newsletter.

This photo is from a sixties Souvenir Book.

This post will feature photos of horses, trail rides, and the simple joy of riding.

Units had three hours of riding a week. These are photos of a two-hour ride to Pine Lake.

When Camp added more units, units got two rides a week of one hour each. The two-week units only did the Pine Lake ride their second week.

I can’t remember Campers ever saddling horses before a ride. These must be Counselors-in-Training!

Happy Trails to every camper who had their first horse experience at Ondessonk!
