Highlighting Our Fall 2024 Outdoor Education Programming at Camp Ondessonk
This fall, Camp Ondessonk proudly partnered with several Belleville and St. Louis Diocesan schools to deliver exceptional Outdoor Education experiences. We welcomed students from St. Clare, St. Ambrose, Immaculate Conception (Columbia, Ill.), St. Louis Priory, St. Andrew’s, Christ the King, and St. James, immersing them in the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the Shawnee National Forest. These schools participated in hands-on, experiential learning activities that deepened their understanding of the natural world and fostered personal growth.
Savahna Scheibe from Immaculate Conception (Columbia, Ill.) shared her thoughts on the experience: “As a teacher, taking my class to Camp Ondessonk for our field trip was an inspiring experience that fostered unity among our students and deepened their connection with God. The serene surroundings and shared activities encouraged teamwork and friendship, allowing each student to grow closer to one another and to their faith. Witnessing their reflections during prayer and discussions was truly moving, highlighting how meaningful experiences like this can strengthen both our community and our spiritual journey together.”
At Camp Ondessonk, Outdoor Education goes beyond traditional classroom boundaries. It is an opportunity to learn through nature, develop teamwork, and cultivate leadership skills. Our certified instructors, who undergo a multi-week, immersive training program, are equipped to guide students in this transformative environment. They facilitate activities ranging from the High Challenge Course, where students conquer thrilling elements like Zip-Lining and the Giant Swing, to Nature Hikes that introduce them to the rich ecology of the Shawnee.
Deanna Smillie from St. Andrew stated, “Our students enjoyed the challenges put before them by learning survival training and higher level team building exercises. The entire experience not only taught heightened self reliance and confidence, but it also promoted teamwork and trust in others while solving the group’s problems. I really enjoy watching my class journey through the experiences they encountered which drew them closer to God, nature, and each other.“
In addition to Environmental Education, students participating in our programs also develop critical life skills like collaboration, communication, and problem-solving. The interactive nature of our curriculum – whether it’s navigating a trail, working together in Archery, or reflecting on their experiences around a campfire – helps students build confidence and an appreciation for the natural world.
Camp Ondessonk’s Outdoor Education Programs align with school curricula while providing a unique setting for students to utilize their classroom knowledge to real-world situations. Our programming focuses on interdependence, leadership, and stewardship, helping students strengthen their connection to the environment and each other.
