Since fifth grade, Camp Ondessonk has been a central part of Ashley (Bergman) Hay’s life. She attended Summer Camp during girl’s week every summer until she was 15. In 2012, she became a CIT and started on staff in 2013.

Ashley was honored to be inducted into the Lodge alongside her younger sister, Alyson, making the experience even more meaningful. Ashley’s parents, Terrie and Mark Bergman, are also Lodge members. “My mom was inducted as a camper and went on to become a staff member and volunteer,” Ashley shared. “My dad joined as a volunteer, further bonding us through shared Camp experiences.”

After joining Lodge, her involvement with Camp grew. She loved engaging with the Clinton County Council, promoting Camp Ondessonk in her community and organizing local Lodge events like their annual Trick-or-Treating event. Staying in regular contact with her Camp friends and attending Lodge Reunions helps keep those connections alive.

One of Ashley’s most treasured Lodge memories was sleeping in the Council Ring, which was special and unique. That night connected her to nature in a way she had not experienced before, especially sharing the experience with her sister. She also loved working together with the newly inducted Lodge members on their service project building the stairs near the High Challenge Course. Of the experience, Ashley said, “It deepened my connection to Camp because we made a contribution.”

Ashley’s experiences at Camp also shaped her values outside of Ondessonk. Whether hiking and picking up litter, volunteering at a community meal for unhoused people, or just giving back, Ashley tries to carry that Camp Spirit of service. As a high school teacher, she also tries to instill in her students the importance of leaving places better than they found them.

“Lifetime Lodge membership means a lot to me,” Ashley explained. “Knowing my dues are taken care of and that I’m part of something lasting. It’s comforting to stay connected through newsletters and events, knowing I’ll always be part of Camp.”
