Camp Ondessonk’s March 2025 Prescribed Burn: A Bold Step Toward Conservation and Forest Health

Why Camp Ondessonk is Leading the Way with a Prescribed Burn in 2025

Camp Ondessonk, nestled in the heart of Southern Illinois, is taking a proactive approach to environmental stewardship by planning a prescribed burn of roughly 50 acres in March 2025. This carefully controlled fire, conducted in collaboration with the Shawnee National Forest, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR)The Nature Conservancy, and the Southern Illinois Prescribed Burn Association (SIPBA), is an opportunity to learn about fire as a management tool and can be a cornerstone of our 2024-2034 Forest Management Plan.

This initiative highlights Camp Ondessonk’s dedication to preserving the region’s natural beauty and ecological health. By embracing prescribed burns, we’re protecting our forests and ensuring a sustainable future for generations.

The Science and Benefits of Prescribed Burns

Prescribed burns are a time-tested, science-backed method for maintaining healthy ecosystems. Here’s how this controlled fire will benefit Camp Ondessonk and the surrounding Shawnee National Forest:

  • Reducing Wildfire Risks: Removing excess dry vegetation lowers the risk of uncontrolled wildfires.
  • Promoting Biodiversity: The burn encourages the growth of native plants, which are essential for a thriving ecosystem.
  • Restoring Wildlife Habitats: Oak and glade ecosystems, vital for many species, will be rejuvenated.
  • Combating Invasive Species: The fire helps control non-native plants that threaten the balance of our forests.

How the 2025 Prescribed Burn Will Be Conducted

The burn will take place near Pakentuck Road and will follow a meticulous, step-by-step process to ensure safety and effectiveness:

  1. Pre-Burn Preparation: Fire breaks have been established, and flammable debris will be cleared to contain the fire.
  2. Ignition Process: The SIPBA and IDNR will initiate the burn, supported by trained fire management teams.
  3. On-Site Fire Management: Experts from SIPBA, IDNR, and The Nature Conservancy will oversee operations to ensure the fire stays within designated boundaries.
  4. Post-Burn Monitoring: After the burn, teams will monitor the area to confirm the fire is fully extinguished and assess its ecological impact.

What We Know About the 2025 Burn Schedule

The USDA Forest Service has confirmed that the prescribed burn for the East Branch Cedar Creek unit will occur in March 2025. While the exact date depends on weather and environmental conditions, here’s what we know so far:

  • The burn will occur on a weekday between March 10th and March 31st.
  • Advance notice will be provided to ensure smooth coordination.

Preparations Are Underway: A Community Effort

The success of this prescribed burn relies on the hard work and collaboration of numerous organizations and volunteers. Here’s how preparations are shaping up:

  • Southern Illinois Prescribed Burn Association (SIPBA) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) have provided critical support, including a full day of prep work with the TNC Women in Fire program and three additional days with SIPBA personnel.
  • Camp Ondessonk’s Outdoor Education (OE) staff have contributed multiple days of preparation.
  • Mike Lewis, SIPBA’s cross-boundary coordinator, will coordinate the final step—clearing the fire line with leaf blowers.

Volunteer Opportunities: Join Us in Making a Difference

We’re calling on the community to join us in this vital conservation effort! Camp Ondessonk is seeking at least six volunteers to assist with burn line operations on the day of the burn.

If you’re passionate about conservation and want to get involved, this is your chance! Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or new to land management, your help is invaluable; please contact evan.coulson@ondessonk.com.
