A Taste of Summer during Family Camp

A Taste of Summer during Family Camp

From September 16th through 18th, Camp Ondessonk hosted Fall Family Camp. More than 185 participants enjoyed a taste of summer camp. Families lodged in treehouse unit camping and St Noel accommodations with the weather delivering partly cloudy skies that provided plenty of opportunity for comfortable outdoor fun.

Guests participated in traditional activities, including boating, archery, handicrafts, climbing wall, and even swimming. The GaGa pit’s competitive spirit was in full effect as both parents and kids tested their abilities. Families enjoyed guided hikes exploring Phantom’s Canyon and Pakentuck and learned about the Shawnee National Forest and Southern Illinois’s local flora.

Both experienced and novice riders enjoyed horseback trail rides through the forest. Emma, a 12-year-old participant, shared, “I love riding horses, especially at Camp Ondessonk. Everyone is so helpful, and I feel like I always learn something new about riding and about Camp when we come to visit.”

Family Camps are an excellent way for parents to introduce Camp to first-time campers before summer. The family weekend also provides a fun chance for Ondessonk campers to share what they love about Camp with their entire family.
