The Journey with Grace and Oliver
T.S. Eliot writes, “The journey, not the destination matters.” For Camp Ondessonk program staff Oliver and Grace, these words cannot be more accurate as they round out their 16 months of service at Camp Ondessonk. Oliver and Grace joined the Ondessonk Seasonal Outdoor Education Team in August of 2019 for a nine-month contract. One month after another, the two slowly extended their contracts until the end of November 2020. Working at Camp Ondessonk has been more than just a destination to check off their bucket lists. It has been a part of their life’s journey. Both of them embraced constant change during these past few months with outstanding professionalism and openness. Oliver and Grace spent their time learning and implementing a wide variety of skills that kept them on their toes—everything from fixing a pasture fence to belaying someone up the climbing wall to completing administrative tasks. Throughout their time, Grace and Oliver both learned and grew as industry professionals and as people. Grace comments, “You need to stay on your toes and look ahead a lot; things that will help no matter what industry you are going into.” Camp Ondessonk is appreciative of our seasonal staff, and especially for Grace and Oliver. Their leadership skills helped us navigate program development during a pandemic, and assisted us with strategizing for the future. We wish both Grace and Oliver luck as they continue on their life’s journey. We are confident the lessons we all learned together at Camp Ondessonk will help them for years to come.
