Program Staff Help in the Stables
Considering the shelter-in-place guidelines Camp Ondessonk has been following since late March, this spring program season has looked different than ones in the past. Even though events, open camping, and other programming have been canceled due to the pandemic, our full-time and program staff have continued to help in the stables.
It’s been all hands on deck while eight of our full-time and program staff have been working hard fixing fences and restringing one section that was completely gone. Usually, program staff are not available to help in the stables due to Outdoor Education programming. Still, with things a little quieter around camp, the five program staff have started grooming, saddle fitting, and riding every Thursday morning to help get the horses’ winter coats shed out. Program staff also helped to assemble an additional round pen that will aid in horse training, as well as an added location for camper programming.
Typically, in mid-April, volunteers gather at Camp Ondessonk to contribute their skills and talent to our stable program. In the past, projects have included everything from maintaining tack and equipment to building a new hay barn. Though we couldn’t host our usual Spring Round-Up, our equestrian team says, “We love and miss our volunteers! We can’t wait until our next reunion with them at camp!”
