Horse Sense Program
Camp Ondessonk’s Horse Sense Program is a 90-minute program where participants of any age can learn all about horses. Led by our experienced and talented equestrian department, groups meet in the barn and discuss feeding; grooming; horse care; herd dynamics, which is how the horses operate within their social groups and how humans fit into that; and other groundwork lessons. Additionally, program staff discuss the science of food and different nutrient requirements for horses, as well as basic first aid. Staff also explain how horses communicate within their own “language” and how humans can use that same communication method to give them instructions.
Assistant Equestrian Director, Emelyn Herndon, says, “With the Horse Sense Program, we build on the topics that the groups get in other programming at Camp, including verbal and non-verbal communication, leadership, responsibility, and respect for both others and nature.” This program is a great option for school groups, beginners, or anyone who wants to learn more about horse care. Each Horse Sense Program can be tailored by our equestrian department to meet the experience level of the group. This makes it the perfect option for all levels, from beginner to advanced.
