Diversity Continuing Education Program
On November 9, 2020, Camp Ondessonk staff members participated in a Diversity Continuing Education Program provided by Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Jaidelynn Rogers, MA, Counseling Psychology Graduate Student and Diversity Trainer, facilitated the program via Zoom Video Conference.
The training covered many core diversity and inclusivity concepts, including anti-racism, privilege, intersectionality, and allyship. Team members shared personal experiences and learned essential steps to foster an open and welcoming Camp culture. Executive Director Dan King states, “Camp has always been a welcoming place, and we, as an organization, must always improve our mindfulness, knowledge, attitude, and skills through continued diversity education.”
Camp Ondessonk has established a Diversity Task Force. This team will be working on enhanced changes, including targeted recruitment, mentoring programs, and renewed management training to make Camp Ondessonk a place where all volunteers, staff, and, most importantly, campers are welcomed with open arms. Here at Camp, we are modeling the strategy of the American Camp Association to “serve as a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) basecamp for the camp world.”
