Cookies for Camp
My name is Olivia Spraul. For the past nine years, as a camper, CIT, and staff member, Camp Ondessonk has been a large, important part of my life. There was never a part of my summer that I looked forward to more than the weeks I would get to spend down in the Shawnee. I was one of the many disappointed people who were unable to return to Camp due to COVID-19 this year. I know that it was a difficult decision to make on behalf of the Admin staff, and I also know that the majority of Camp’s funds come from the campers. That is why I decided to dedicate the latter half of my summer to raising funds to support this wonderful place.
With summer camp being cancelled, I realized that I wanted to make a monetary donation to Camp. Unfortunately, I am a seventeen-year-old with very few savings. I didn’t feel like I could make a substantial donation by myself, but you know what they say – if you cannot give money, offer up a talent instead. This is why I decided to combine my love of Camp with my other great love – baking. Starting two weeks ago, I created Cookies for Camp. I sold frozen cookie dough and freshly baked cookies to the people in my town, hoping to raise a bit more money. I was floored by the response I got. With the support of the people in my community, I was able to raise $1,757 for Camp in just two weeks. Just by baking cookies. I plan to continue this fundraiser throughout the year, and I hope that I can write another check in the future.
This is the place where I met many of my best friends, where I reconnected with nature, and where I discovered my true self. This Camp has been like a second home for me, and it is my hope that it can continue to run as it always has. I want thousands of new children to be able to have the same wonderful experiences that I was able to have here. I hope I can return next summer as a staff member, more ready and excited than ever before. I hope that soon we can back to teaching kids what matters most.
Thank you and God bless,
